"Gun Crazy"'s essential. So's Cocteau's "Beauty and the Beast". I generally like stories about obsessive love and Alida Valli's a mesmerizing object of same in Hitchcock's undervalued "Paradine Case". I'd have preferred Olivier in Peck's role but everyone else is splendid. Women's prison pic cum laude "Caged" is vital viewing for all lovers of great actressing. And it's supposededly due on DVD this year. Finally, I defy anyone to resist the combined forces of Gene Tierney,Joseph L.Mankiewicz, Bernard Herrmann and the 20th Century Fox art and cinematography departments all in spectacular high 40's form - in other words, "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir."

Thanks for the great list. If my count is right, I've seen 33.

Love you mentioned The Rocking Horse Winner- anyone who hasn't seen this remarkable film should do so, right now (I think Valerie Hobson's perfection in it).

I recently saw Storm Warning for the first time and was fairly blown away, especially by the under-ratedwork of Steve Cochran.

I saw The Red Shoes listed, and I'm curious to know if you've also seen Powell and Pressburger's The Tales of Hoffman? It's uneven, but one segment featuring Moira Shearer as a wind-up doll is brilliant, and Shearer's look and her dancing are breathtaking to watch (you start to believe she really is that doll).

I think I've seen all of the Esther Williams titles listed. Definitely one-of-a-kind films. There should be a box set out this year, if Warner stays true to it's word. Hope they talked to the lady herself for the DVDs.

Finally, where-oh-where are Caged and Beyond the Forest on DVD? My life just isn't complete without having the opportunity to hear jailbird Jan Sterling whine "Hey, I got news for ya" or Bette Davis sigh "what a dump" at any given moment of the day.

To Vertigo's Psycho: Re "Tales of Hoffman". I tried to watch it some years back and bailed out. Found it too unremittingly high-brow for my tastes. I'm not big on omnibus style films to begin with. And, of course, its predecessor "The Red Shoes" had such a feverishly involving storyline. But on the strength of your remarks, I rented it again this week. Still have some of the same reservations. Its airlessness is often suffocating - like being trapped in a lavishly appointed coffin. But, you're right, it does have much to recommend it. The color's beyond rich, the decor (though frequently too stylized and stagey for my tastes) is fascinating. And Moira Shearer's memorable - with her star quality and breathtaking automoton dance. What's more, I finally see why producers thought they could make a movie star out of Ludmilla Tcherina. She's quite the lush Technicolor vision in the "Giulietta" sequence. Cut from the same shimmering cloth as Sarita Montiel with dashes of Hedy Lamarr and Dolores del Rio. And together she and Robert Helpmann communicate an arresting vampiric intensity. It's the segment I've rewatched most this week. Thanks for the nudge.

Glad you gave it another look, Ken. I recommended it based primarily on the Shearer segment- I agree there are flaws in the film and that much of it is deliberately "arty," but Shearer's fabulous dancing amid those vibrant colors outweigh the negatives for me- she's truly something to see in it, and the doll story must certainly be the best-paced and most well-directed portion of the film.
