YAY!

Also, just out of curiosity, why 'Troy'?

I've seen 114! Man, I bet I've seen more, but I can't recall the titles of all those Italian Hercules movies.

I love musicals, so there's plenty of those on my list. I also thank my younger days of watching the Saturday morning movies on TV (you young whippersnappers may not remember that the only way to see many of these movies was to wait for them to show up on TV - the horror, the horror). Saturday mornings were great for the Abbott & Costello movies.

I just have to say that anyone who has Robinson Crusoe on Mars on his favorites list is the kind of person I'd like to watch movies with.

"The Red Angel" - about a Japanese nurse's tour of duty in WW2 China is shattering stuff. Not surprisingly, it was pretty much unknown in the west in the 60's. But it's on DVD now.
If you're up for a spaghetti western, "A Bullet for the General"'s the way to go - a very good - and possibly great - movie.
Vincent Price's two Dr. Phibes pictures are still fun. And the wonderful Robert Quarry makes the second one especially savory. A third instalment was planned ("Dr.Phibes in the Holy Land") but, sadly, never materialized.
Vera Miles has a showcase role (largely unappreciated then and now) in the revisionist western "Molly and Lawless John". Check it out.
And Cliff Robertson & Genevieve Bujold (aided and abetted by Bernard Herrmann) make a memorably lovelorn pair in Brian De Palma's poignant thriller "Obsession".
Michael Tolkin's unique and gutsy "The Rapture" is definitely worth catching.
The one Canadian film on my list is visionary Guy Maddin's epic-on-a-shoestring "Archangel". Astonishing - and available as a bonus on the DVD of (the costlier but much less impressive) "Twilight of the Ice Nymphs". The disc also contains Maddin's mind-blowing six-minute short "Heart of the World"

Finally, why "Troy"?
Why not?
I was crazy about ancient mythology as a kid. I remember staring transfixed at the huge billboard dominating our main street. It was promoting Warner Brothers' upcoming "Helen of Troy" with Rossana Podesta. I was practically exploding with excitement by the time it arrived. And guess what! I wasn't disappointed. It fuelled a lifelong appetite for Ancient Epics. Hence the Euro-Peplum fetish. Mind you, I've seen some duds. But my pulse still speeds up when I get wind of a new sword and sandal opus on the horizon. So I was definitely up for "Troy" and "Alexander". And I liked them both. I'd give "Troy" the edge, though. Great photography! I loved the overhead shots of the fleet and of the city's final sacking. There were some terrific battle scenes. Remember those tumbling fireballs? And full marks for the early skirmish that winds up with Brad Pitt storming a temple on the beach. Beautifully choreographed and exciting. I've never been all that sold on Brad Pitt. But I think he did fine here. And I was blown away by his commitment to the fight training, climaxing with that great one-on-one with Eric Bana. I found the script involving - and the cast ran with it. Kudos to Orlando Bloom for playing a non-heroic character - and beautifully! Peter O'Toole's superb, of course; Vincent Regan's a memorable Eudorus. Even the extra sprinkle of stardust from Julie Christie works for me. Regrets? Well, I'd love to hear the Gabriel Yared score that was dumped weeks before the premiere and hastily replaced with one that James Horner whipped up. It was serviceable. But the few who've heard the Yared music say it's something special. And then there's the casting of Helen. Diane Kruger was perfectly fine. But I read an (unconfirmed) report in the Indian press that ravishing Aishwarya Rai had initially been approached - but turned it down because of a projected nude love scene in the script. A large part of the world's population regards Rai as the most beautiful woman in films. And I wouldn't really argue. The onetime Miss World has also developed into quite a sensitive actress as well. So it would have been marvelous to see her cast as the Face That Launched a Thousand Ships. As it is, she's currently the face on a million or so L'Oreal "Volume Shocking" Mascara billboards world-wide. Still, even without Aishwarya, I found "Troy" a treat. I believe the picture's domestic box-office performance was only so-so. But it was a smash in almost every other country in the world. Proving that sword and sandal's here to stay.
